Facing the almost vertical layers of the grey limestone rock of La Baume, built on a rocky outcrop towering 1500 feet above the city, the Citadel is the jewel of Sisteron.
A listed monument, the Citadel is made up of buildings from many different periods. The upper rampart and keep date back to the 12th century. In the 16th century a battlemented fortification was added to the city wall. A new invention at that time, Vauban, the great French military builder, adopted and improved the idea in the 17th century. More additions were made in the 19th century. Since 1956, the Citadel has been painstakingly restored by associations and the municipality.
